Writing A Business Plan

I have an idea and I want to go forward but I am stuck because I am panicking about writing a business plan.

I have no idea what to do, it all seems very complicated and I feel overwhelmed, therefore I do nothing instead.

What would you suggest I do?

Writing A Business Plan
by: Jackie

I think sometimes there is too much emphasis on plan and not enough on business.

I think people are held back by the thought of business planning and either don't want to or don't know how to do it and therefore get stuck in idle mode, never letting go of the side.

I have written about this here:

Writing A Business Plan

There are new tools out to help you create a business plan if you really need one.

If you like something a bit more traditional...

Another favourite way I learned about writing a business plan was the one in a book by Paul McKenna, the British Hypnotist and prolific author of many life changing books.

In his book, I Can Make You Rich, he has a section about business planning and he calls the Chapter, the Simplest Business Plan In The World.

Here in essence is how it goes:

1. Purpose, Values & Vision
2. Current Reality
3. One Year Outcomes
4. Strategies
5. Action Plan

---------------------------------------------------------

He stresses, "Do not underestimate the power of the questions as they are simple by design"

So to begin, get your blank sheet of paper and write...

1. Purpose Values & Vision

  • What does your business do? In 500 words or less

  • How does it operate?

  • Explain your business to a 5 year old

  • Who are you customers?

  • What is the ultimate goal of the business?

  • Why are you in this business?

  • What does truly outrageous success look, sound and feel like?

  • How will you know when you have finished with this business?

He then goes on to a lot more other questions you can ask, the above ones are the ones he starts with for the simple plan.

2. Current Reality

  • In relation to your business vision, what is going on right now?

  • What have you done up to this point to get things going?

  • Your competitors include?

  • Is this business financially viable in its current form? Why or Why Not?

  • If not, how long till you make money based on fact not hopes and fears?

  • What is the monthly expenditure? How long before you run out of capital?

  • Which employee if any generate more income than they cost?

3. Outcomes

  • At the end of the year how will you define success?

  • One year from today, what will you have achieved?

  • What are some longer term outcomes for your business?

  • What are your medium outcomes?

  • What is your new one year vision?

4. Strategies

  • How will you achieve your outcome for the year?
  • What are the major obstacles you need to overcome?
  • What is the competition doing?
  • Where can you add value? What is missing?
  • How do you reach your target audience?
  • Why will customers buy what you are selling?

5. Actions

  • What actions are on your to do list?
  • What are you procrastinating about?
  • If you had all the resources you needed what would you do next?

I hope you find either method useful but unless you are wanting to start a major company and need funding, just start small, but most of all...

Just start will you?
